Mao Nagaba "APIECE OF PAPER" launch commemorative pop-up event O Nagaba Interview with Yu Nagaba

There is a taste that can be seen because it is simple. Yu Nagaba, an artist known for his monochrome line drawing works. The other day, a pop-up event was held at SkiiMa gallery on the 4th floor of Shinsaibashi PARCO to commemorate the publication of A PIECE OF PAPER. This collection of works is a collection of various client works from 2018 to 2022, but it is a big volume of 656 pages in total. I can't help but pay attention to the specification that the binding is a wrapping paper for copy paper. But Mr. Nagaba, why is it a copy paper?

Mr. Nagaba's work has few elements, and that's why it is attractive to be able to imagine the depth of the painting. What do you think about yourself?

Long field: Leave a margin that the viewer can intervene, and create a margin that allows the viewer to enter the picture. I have a desire to create a picture that allows me to interact with each other.

ーThis time, a large work exceeding 2m in height is also on display at the venue. What is depicted are children, trikeratops, and elderly couples.

Long field: It's a scene of a movie I watched with my family. It is a work drawn from the idea that by combining everyday fragments like a puzzle, a different everyday scenery and a feeling of air will come out. It's like choosing a lot of information and interpreting it on your own.

ーーDo you like to make a picture of a piece of everyday life and relive it side by side?

Long field: I want to know what I feel and where I am going. The desire to draw this on a daily basis is a point. How do you see it when you make it a "line"? You may be looking for it.

A signing session was held at the venue on April 15, 2023.

ー Especially when it is a big work, you can clearly see where there is a fluctuation on the line. Isn't it like Mr. Nagaba?

Long field: If you look closely, you can see that there is a fluctuation in the A4 picture. Without it, I don't think there will be any catches to the viewer. Is that fluctuation noise? Is it delicious? I don't know, but I want to leave it. Even if you take it into a computer and make it a beautiful line, it doesn't fit somewhere. The accuracy is high, but there is nothing to appeal. That's why I value the blaze and fluctuation of the line.

I will sign while talking with each person.

What did you think again when you saw the work collection "APIECE OF PAPER" on your own? Do you follow your footsteps?

Long field: I painted a lot (laughs). Anyway, I have a desire to move my hands. If you don't move your hand, you won't get the answer. I want to do that all the time.

Finally, what kind of artist do you think Nagaba Yu is on your own?

Long field: Well, what's it? Do you have a good idea? I think so (laughs)

Looking back ("A PEACE OF PAPER"), it was done without overdoing it, and I am grateful that many people, including clients, understand their style.
