Vol.3 "MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 2" Takayuki Yamada Exclusive Interview (March 3)

Vol.3 "MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 2" Takayuki Yamada Exclusive Interview

"MIRRORLIAR FILMS" is a borderless short film project created to deliver opportunities and charms of film production with the aim of discovering and fostering creators. Shinsaibashi PARCO held an exclusive interview with Takayuki Yamada, one of the producers and starring in the upcoming season 2 “The Little Star”. As I talked, I saw Mr. Yamada's belief in the Japanese film world.

―Mr. Yamada advocates the discovery and development of creators and filmmakers in "MIRRORLIAR FILMS", and also solicits works for public recruitment. What is the purpose of this?

Yamada: Now that technology is evolving rapidly, it is said that it is an era where anyone can make a movie. There are many people who made movies for the first time by public recruitment, and if they were challenged anyway, they would be excited to see if various expressionists were born more and more.

―How many applications did the general public receive?

Yamada: I sent 419 works in total. I had to look through all the submitted works and narrow down to 12 works, so it took quite a while.

―That's a great number.

Yamada: I don't know where the interesting people are sleeping, so I raised a prize of 5 million yen in an easy-to-understand manner to finally decide the Grand Prix in the form of a film festival. Next is Seasons 5 and 6…We will continue, so we will recruit again.

―It's just about discovering creators and creating opportunities for movie production. Even so, with a prize of 5 million yen, it seems to be a very large film festival.

Yamada: There is also a reason for the amount of money, so if you get a prize, you can use it when you take the next work. Even if you can't become a Grand Prix, interesting works may be heard from somewhere, and if you accumulate achievements in that way, maybe you will eventually take a feature film. Everyone comes up with ideas in a lack of time and money, so I would be very happy if I got caught up in something and the number of filmmakers increased.

―After hearing this story, I felt that Mr. Yamada really thought about the future of the Japanese film industry. Please give me a message to future filmmakers.

Yamada: I think it's nice to try it first. We are opening the door to the film industry through the activities of MIRRORLIAR FILMS. Until now, movies that I just enjoyed as entertainment will definitely change when I make them. I'd be happy if you take the most care of the feeling of "I want to do it" and try it by all means.

―Shinsaibashi PARCO also launched various events with challenging creators and shops, so I felt very familiar in terms of hooking up new talents.

Yamada: It's perfect when asked.

This is our first initiative, and we will exhibit ikebana made in Kyoto with the theme of "MIRRORLIAR FILMS" in digital art. The expression is spreading more and more, and I don't know what will happen anymore.

―Finally, what if you do something with PARCO?

Yamada: I thought a little about it, but there was a human drama set in Village Vanguard before, but I thought it would be interesting to make some work on PARCO. Personally, I think it may be interesting to make documentary films.
