Interview with GOMA EXHIBITION “Hikari Map” (1/3)

Interview with GOMA EXHIBITION "Hikari Map"

GOMA is a musician and painter of Australian brass instrument dejuridu. Currently, his solo exhibition "Hikari's Map" is being held. Point drawings, which suddenly began to draw after a traffic accident in 2009, are like dynamic fluctuations of overlapping waves, like graphical mathematical sequences, and like Mandala. These dense and powerful, dazzling worlds are all scenes of the "other world" that emerges in your brain as consciousness recovers. Let's ask GOMA about his enthusiasm for the solo exhibition and his drawing.

ーThis "Hikari Map" is a tour of the exhibition held in Tokyo last September, but in Osaka, the space of the venue will increase, so it seems to be a more fulfilling solo exhibition.

GOMA: Yes, the venue has become wider and the work has changed a little. The score will not change at about 40 points, but the size of the picture will change and video works will be planned. I made a room using the experience when my consciousness returns like a map, but this time I plan to increase the number of rooms.

ー It will be a space where you can appreciate the work more closely.

GOMA: Let's feel more immersive. I will also prepare a chair. That's different from the exhibition in Tokyo. I hope you can watch it slowly.

ー Isn't your enthusiasm a little different about holding this event in Osaka, where you came from?

GOMA: That's right. You can't be ashamed of me. There are many old playmates, people who have been watching my growth for a long time, and people who have supported me, so if you could have an exhibition unique to the local community that meets expectations. There's pressure in a good sense.

ー When was the work exhibited this time?

GOMA: I wonder if there are many things I drew around 2020-2021, Corona vortex. I was drawing at that time (laughs). There was no music event, so it was time for painting production. I usually draw pictures every day, but I feel that the amount has increased considerably.

ーWhat is the size of your work?

GOMA: The big size is 2m70cm long and about 2m wide. The small size is about 30cm x 30cm.

ーWhat are the criteria for drawing the size?

GOMA: I paint every day, so I feel like that. I draw it in a hotel room even when I'm traveling, so in that case it will be a small size.
