Yu Nagaba "A PIECE OF PAPER" pop-up event Interview with Yu Nagaba (January 2)

There is a taste that can be seen because it is simple. Artist Yu Nagaba, known for his monochrome line drawing works. The other day, a pop-up event was held at the SkiiMa gallery on the 4th floor of PARCO Shinsaibashi. This collection is a collection of works that include various client works from 2018 to 2022, but a total of 656 pages of big volume. I can't help but pay attention to the specifications of wrapping paper for copy paper. But Mr. Nagaba, why is it a copy paper?

ー This collection of works “A PIECE OF PAPER” has a sense of “things”. The total number of pages is 656 pages.
Nagaba: Anyway, there was a desire to create a sense of volume.
ーWhere is the idea of putting together like a bundle of copy paper?
Nagaba: I always draw pictures on A4 copy paper, regardless of draft or clear book. When I finished drawing, I stock it in the box, but it is a huge bundle of bundles, and it comes from there.

                                                                                          - The cover of the collection of works is wrapping paper of a bundle of copy paper. It's also interesting to see such a stylish look.
Nagaba: I asked designer Yoshihisa Tanaka for binding, but originally I was a fan of Tanaka, and I liked the work of Nerhol (artist duo), and I was happy if I could do something together. Originally, the word "copy paper" was in my head, but Mr. Tanaka saw a bundle of original drawings in the atelier and embodyed it.

ー There is also a drawing exhibition at the venue. Unlike the works I usually see, the underdrawn drawn was surprisingly surprising.
Nagaba: It is important to look for the line first. When I can't draw well, I sometimes re-drawn the same motif many times, but in such a case, I often look for the correct answer from the sketch below.
What is Mr. Nagaba's right thinking?
Nagaba: I don't like things that are too explanatory. I try not to explain it as much as possible, but to explain it. I sometimes draw more details.

ー For example, there are works with the characters SONIC YOUTH, but is this descriptive?
Nagaba: This is a picture of the musician Nirvana, because the members were wearing a Sonic Youth T-shirt. It is not explanatory, but it may be that there is an intention that knowing the influence relationship between Nirvana and Sonic Youth will blur the background of this picture.
