Tomomi Awaji | 『PARCO CHAOS JAM』INTERVIEW (1/2)
Shinsaibashi PARCO 3rd anniversary event “PARCO CHAOS JAM”. Tomomi Awaji drew the visual illustration. She is an up-and-coming illustrator living in Osaka known for her "moving illustrations." The style is pop of momentum and powerlessness. The moving figure has a taste. Maybe it's a new era? If you listen, it seems that the kikkake that started drawing moving pictures was a friend's wedding.

ーHow did you get to paint?
Awaji: At my friend's wedding, I made a four-frame manga and presented Naresonme as a present. It is a story of making it a moving anime and playing it in the opening movie of the second party.
ー It was a "moving illustration" from the beginning.
Awaji: Until then, I would draw a little bit of a letter to a friend. For the opening movie, I drew a lot of pictures on copy paper and made it for the first time. That's around 2015. From the one who saw it, he said, “I want us to make it too.” If you upload it to SNS, there are also offers from people you don't know. I was able to do a little bit of painting.
ーYou were attending the classroom of Junzo Terada, an illustrator/picture book writer in Osaka.
Awaji: I didn't go to painting school until then. I thought I wanted to be like an illustrator somehow, but I don't know anything about painting. So I started going to learn that Junzo Terada was doing an illustration school. Mr. Terada is an interesting kid (laughs).
- (Laughs) I want to learn about painting from an interesting little girl.
Awaji: As with my knowledge, I want to know the format and billing method of the picture as a job. Who can I ask? There's a lot of things I don't know. Dr. Terada advised me, "It's definitely more interesting to see the painting moving." “It’s better to move.”
I see. In the visual of PARCO CHAOS JAM this time, beer, octopus, record, etc. are drawn and moved. How do you decide on the motif to draw?
Awaji: Oh, you don't think deeply. If you think deeply, it will not be interesting. So write down what you first thought. You're thinking. Then consider the structure and balance of movement. The color scheme is also strong.
- Is it important to think?
Awaji: That's right. I had only drawn pictures from the beginning. Do you think your ideas and pictures are set? It's just fun to paint. Now it spreads well. Thank you very much.
Do you not paint what you like?
Awaji: That's right. I often draw things that are familiar and like. What can I paint? I don't paint when I'm worried (laughs). In such a case, drink beer, sleep early, and draw when you get well.
ー Is there anything you care about in the movement of the irast?
Awaji: Is it lively? I still paint one by one as before. Now it's not copy paper, but iPad. How smooth do you move? Do you want to suck? I'm thinking about it.
ーWhat if you say that you can't give up only here?
Awaji: Does it seem meaningless, do you? That's better. It's fun! It's sad! Or I think that drawing with simple emotions is right for me.
