Tomomi Awaji | 『PARCO CHAOS JAM』INTERVIEW (1/2)

Tomomi Awaji | 『PARCO CHAOS JAM』INTERVIEW

Shinsaibashi PARCO 3rd anniversary event "PARCO CHAOS JAM". Tomomi Awaji drew the illustration of the visual. She is an up-and-coming illustrator living in Osaka, known for her "moving illustrations." The style is pop with momentum and weakness. The moving figure has a mysterious taste. Maybe it's a new era of squirrel? I heard that the key to starting drawing moving pictures was a friend's wedding.

How did you come to draw pictures?

Awaji: At a friend's wedding, I made Narisome a four-frame manga and presented it. It's a story about making it a moving anime and playing it in the opening movie of the second party.

It was a "moving illustration" from the beginning.

Awaji: Until then, I drew a little bit on a letter to my friend. In the opening movie, I drew a lot of pictures on copy paper and made it for the first time. That was around 2015. From the person who saw it, "I want us to make it." If you upload it to SNS, there are also offers from strangers. I've been able to work on painting a little bit.

ーYou went to the classroom of Junzo Terada, an illustrator/picture book writer in Osaka.

Awaji: I wasn't going to the painting school until then. I thought I wanted to be like an illustrator somehow, but I don't know anything about painting at all. So I started going to know that Junzo Terada was doing an illustration school. Terada-sensei is an interesting uncle (laughs).

ー(Laughs) I want to learn the knowledge of painting from an interesting uncle.

Awaji: I know the same, and I want to know the format of the picture and how to claim it as a job. Who should I ask? There are a lot of things I don't know. Mr. Terada advised me that it would be more interesting to have a picture moving. "It's better to move."

I see. The visual of this "PARCO CHAOS JAM" shows beer, octopus, records, etc. How do you decide on the motif to draw?

Awaji: Well, I don't think deeply. If you think deeply, it will not be interesting. So take a note of what you first came up with. I think of it. Then think about the composition and balance of movement. The color scheme is also strong.

Do you think about it?

Awaji: That's right. I was only drawing from the beginning. It's said that my thoughts and pictures are set. Sometimes it's fun to draw. That's spreading with a good feeling now. Thank you very much.

Why don't you draw if you don't like it?

Awaji: That's right. I often draw familiar and favorite things. What should I draw? I don't draw when I'm worried (laughs). In such a case, drink beer, sleep early, and draw when you get well.

Do you have anything to keep in mind with the movement of the ghost?

Awaji: It's lively. Even now, I draw one by one as before. Right now it's not a copy paper, but an iPad. How much do you make the movement smooth? Do you want to do it? I'm thinking about it.

Do you want to mention your commitment that you can't give up only here?

Awaji: It doesn't seem to be meaningless. That's better. It's fun! I'm sad! I think it's best to draw with simple emotions.
